Mercury atmospheric emission, deposition and isotopic fingerprinting from major coal-fired power plants in Australia: Insights from palaeo-environmental analysis from sediment cores

چکیده

Despite Australia's high reliance on coal for electricity generation, no study has addressed the extent to which mercury (Hg) deposition increased since commissioning of coal-fired power plants. We present stratigraphic data from lake sediments in Hunter Valley (New South Wales) and Latrobe (Victoria), where a significant proportion is generated via combustion. Mercury 1970s with plants, by factor 2.9-times Lake Glenbawn (Hunter Valley) 14-times Traralgon Reservoir (Latrobe Valley). Sediments deposited after plants have distinct Hg isotope compositions, similar those combusted coals. emission, estimated using an atmospheric model (CALPUFF), was higher than Valley. This result concentrations lignite coal, lax regulation older pollution-control technologies adopted Near-source Australia significantly North America Europe, better emission controls (e.g. wet flue gas desulfurization) been effect decades. The challenge years come will be ratify Minamata Convention develop policies reduce emissions.

Economic analysis of atmospheric mercury emission control for coal-fired power plants in China.

Coal combustion and mercury pollution are closely linked, and this relationship is particularly relevant in China, the world's largest coal consumer. This paper begins with a summary of recent China-specific studies on mercury removal by air pollution control technologies and then provides an economic analysis of mercury abatement from these emission control technologies at coal-fired power pla...

Mercury pollution in vegetables, grains and soils from areas surrounding coal-fired power plants

Mercury contamination in food can pose serious health risks to consumers and coal-fired power plants have been identified as the major source of mercury emissions. To assess the current state of mercury pollution in food crops grown near coal-fired power plants, we measured the total mercury concentration in vegetables and grain crops collected from farms located near two coal-fired power plant...
